Introducing the R.C. Sproul Chair of Theology

Dr. R.C. Sproul founded Reformation Bible College to train the next generation of faithful Christian disciples. Building on his legacy, a new donor-supported named chair honors a scholar who exemplifies Dr. Sproul’s lifelong commitment to biblical truth and dedication to the church.

With great joy, RBC has appointed Dr. Keith Mathison as the inaugural R.C. Sproul Chair of Theology.

About the R.C. Sproul Chair of Theology

The R.C. Sproul Chair of Theology seeks to honor the past and invest in the future. Established in honor of Dr. R.C. Sproul’s theological vision and enduring legacy, the chair advances the teaching of systematic theology at Reformation Bible College while strengthening the college’s mission of educating students in the historic Christian faith.

The chairholder provides theological leadership within the college and beyond by teaching, mentoring, and discipling students; contributing to the intellectual life of the institution; engaging in scholarly research and publication; and representing RBC through writing, speaking, and public ministry.

Dr. John Tweeddale, Vice President of Academics, shared:

“The R.C. Sproul Chair of Theology stands as a lasting tribute to Dr. Sproul’s vision for Reformation Bible College. It exists to strengthen theological education at RBC for generations of students, pastors, and Christian leaders.

“The establishment of the R.C. Sproul Chair of Theology represents a significant milestone not only in Dr. Mathison’s career, but in the history of RBC. As we look to the future, this chair serves as a visible reminder of our enduring commitment to educate students in the historic Christian faith, as affirmed in the Reformed confessions, so that they know, serve, and worship God in all of life.”

About Dr. Keith Mathison 

Dr. Keith Mathison has served Ligonier Ministries and Reformation Bible College for more than thirty years as a theologian, author, editor, and professor, cultivating a ministry that has shaped generations of students and Christians around the world. 

Dr. Mathison earned his M.A. from Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando, Florida, and his Ph.D. from Whitefield Theological Seminary. He is the author of numerous books, including From Age to Age: The Unfolding of Biblical Eschatology and Given for You: Reclaiming Calvin’s Doctrine of the Lord’s Supper. He served as an associate editor of the Reformation Study Bible and previously served as associate editor of Tabletalk magazine.

Since the founding of Reformation Bible College, Dr. Mathison has played a central role in the college’s academic and theological life through his teaching, writing, and mentorship of students. In fact, he taught the very first class at RBC on August 22, 2011. His appointment as the inaugural R.C. Sproul Chair of Theology recognizes a lifetime of faithful theological service and his significant contribution to the vision and purpose of RBC and the broader Christian community. 

Dr. John Tweeddale shared, “Few individuals have done more to shape the theological culture of RBC than Dr. Keith Mathison. He exemplifies the qualities Dr. Sproul most valued in a theologian: faithfulness to Scripture, clarity in teaching, intellectual rigor, and a heart for the church. I cannot imagine a more fitting inaugural holder of this chair.”

Dr. R.C. Sproul affectionately called Dr. Mathison a “caveman” because of the many hours he has spent studying and writing. In a letter to Dr. Mathison, Dr. Sproul wrote, “From the darkness of his cave he sends light to the whole world.” See the full letter below:

Keith Mathison is a treasure for Ligonier Ministries.

He is a treasure for Reformation Bible College.

He is a treasure for Saint Andrew’s Chapel.

He is a treasure for the whole world.

I call him a caveman. He spends so much time in his office—it is his cave.

But he is one of the most productive cavemen ever. From the darkness of his cave, he sends light to the whole world.

He may be a caveman, but he’s our caveman. It doesn’t get any better than that.

An Invitation to the Inaugural Lecture

On September 17, 2026, at 6:30 p.m., Dr. Mathison will present the inaugural lecture as the R.C. Sproul Chair of Theology. He will be presenting “Technology and the Theologian: Opportunities and Obstacles,” and the event will include a question-and-answer portion. You can join us in person at Founders Hall or via our livestream on YouTube. Seating will be limited, so we encourage you to arrive early. We hope to see you there.
